Patogh – Scrumptious Iranian Cuisine!

Biggest Bread Ever!

I have never been to Iran physically but I feel I have traveled to Tehran and beyond owing to my obsession for Iranian food.

Recently, I discovered Patogh after a sudden pang of craving for chicken kebabs and tender lamb curry. Located on Crawford Road, London, it is just a few minutes’ walks from Marble Arch tube station – Patogh is by far the best Persian cuisine I have eaten in London.

Patogh is a small and compact place with a  limited seating. There is no fancy decoration and please forget fine-dining when you decide to pay the restaurant a visit. Tables are shared, mocha walls are decorated with old Persian paintings and antique red lanterns. The moment I entered, it felt like I had stepped into an abandoned Persian  kingdom which had lost it glory and grandeur in a long forgotten battle, hundreds of years back. As my growling stomach pulled me back to reality, I desperately hoped that the food would be good and YES! It exceeded my expectations! 🙂

Food is the main highlight of Patogh. It is prepared in front of you as you order. Specialties include: gigantic bread sprinkled with sesame seeds and served with mint yogurt ( I can bet you wouldn’t have seen a BIGGER bread than this!), Hummus, Chicken/Beef Skewers and Kebabs served with Saffron Rice with a slice of butter on top ..YUMMM!

Me and my friend shared a lamb curry with chick peas , cooked in delicious Iranian spices and tastefully garnished with ginger and a chicken Kebab  which comprised of 2 huge Kebabs and served with saffron rice, boiled tomatoes and salad. We also tried their mint yogurt drink which is quite similar to lassi (yogurt-based drink which originated in the Punjab region in Subcontinent. It is made by blending yogurt with water and spices).

At a quick glance, Patogh is definitely worth a visit! They have:

– Huge Portions

– Mouth-Watering Food

– Economical (we ordered 2 mains, 2 starters, 3 drinks, pot of mint tea  and our bill was only £26!!!)

– Efficient and friendly Service

They don’t accept payment by card so get some cash out from the nearest cash point before you get set to relish some juicy kebabs 😉

Highly recommended, make sure you go with an appetite! Definitely a journey that made me feel like I was in a food street in Iran, munching on greedily…Oh the joy!

The sun is about to set
Like a rule laid down in a bet

I stand on the shore
While my heart is painfully tore

The wind blows and whistles
While moving dexterously through my hair

Like a mother’s hand
Like a baby’s touch

Sky dips in flames
Notwithstanding any new games

Far across the distance, a sea-gull glides
From the shadows of the night it hides

The waves ferociously roar
Shaking my soul, to the very core

Washing the sand away
Of the past and the present

Bringing with them a gift
In the form of a new commencement

I examine my feet anew
Exactly like flowers sparkle at dawn, full of dew

For now when I hear the waves coming
I find myself lost in their tune, involuntarily humming

Breakfast at Tiffany’s!

Tiffany & Co. has been touching lives since 1837 specifically of women from all over the globe. I did not say, just women as eventually men pay for the extravagant rings purchased from Tiffany’s when popping the question 😉 or for other memorable occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. Quiet a dent on the pocket but perfect recipe for a happily ever after 🙂

Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (1961)

A name synonymous to luxury, premium jewellery, elegant style and distinct taste – Tiffany’s is world-famous for its diamonds and are the apple of every woman’s eye.

Be it Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ where Tiffany’s is mentioned or Audrey Hepburn portraying a socialite with zest for fashion and parties in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ – the brand in itself has a solid standing and  recognition in the world of glamour, fashion and movies.

Marilyn Monroe performing ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ from the movie Gentlemen prefer Blondes (1953)

More recently, Tiffany’s has been mentioned in a vast variety of movies,TV shows and books. Some of them include:

  • Sleepless in Seattle (1993), a long scene takes place first outside, then inside Tiffany & Co. showing Meg Ryan and Bill Pullman’s characters
  • Legally Blonde (2001) and Legally Blonde 2 (2003), the protagonist Elle Woods played by Reese Witherspoon dons a heart necklace from Tiffany’s.
  • Summer at Tiffany , a 2007 memoir by Marjorie Hart, lists her experiences as one of the first two female floor employees at Tiffany during the summer of 1945. The book is full of Hart’s interactions with celebrities of the time.
  • Glee (TV show) , (2011), Rachel and Kurt are seen having breakfast in front of Tiffany & Co.
  • Gossip Girl (TV show), one of the main characters, Blair Woldorf, is a fan of Audrey Hepburn movies. Various references are made to the brand and the flamboyance that comes with it.

I recently purchased my first ever Tiffany’s jewellery! It is a silver bracelet which is inspired by a design from 1969, this celebrated collection bears an inscription that reminds one that there’s no place like Tiffany. There is a mini tag in sterling silver on a bead bracelet. 7″ long. My current love!!!

Honey, I am home!

Badshahi Masjid, Lahore.Completed in 1674 under Aurangzeb's the Mughals last great Mosque; the incredible Mosque opposite the gateway to the Lahore Fort is one of the worlds largest mosques.
Badshahi Masjid, Lahore.

‘Cabin crew prepare for landing’ pulled me out of my peaceful slumber

A few highs and lows and finally the wheels touched the ground

It was still dark outside with only a few illuminated dots miles away

Sun was fast asleep – completely zonked out

As I stepped out of the sardined Boeing 777

A delightful and extremely humid breeze of air fanned my face

My chaotic hair flew back in perfect submission,as I breathed this air

My body loved the dramatic transition

From a snowy London to a springy Lahore

From -2 degrees to 20 degrees.

I had travelled in time, from one season to another

In eight hours, just like a movie on fast forward

Finally, back to where I belong.

Honey, I am home!

The cold hands were piercing the flesh
Like a knife was slaughtering an animal afresh

Sending messages of unknown sensations
Of loss and victory and sometimes their amalgamated flirtations

Screams, cries and howl unheard
Yearn, desire and thirst unfelt

The clouds ferociously roar
As if they were mercilessly tore

Earth explodes
A secret un-codes

In the commotion, the sky sprinkled
While the mud wrinkled

Havoc stops
Mayhem drops

But the stream of pain flows
As the lifeless face glows

Telling the legend of its massacre, forever
Living a distinguished life, forever!

Bash or Blood?

During my first year in Uni, I studied Communication Skills. As part of our module, we were supposed to make a documentary film on a subject of our own choiceMe and my two friends chose BasantBasant is a kite-flying festival which is usually a way of welcoming spring! It is widely celebrated in Punjab, both Pakistan as well as India.

The historic city of Lahore is the hub of all Basant festivities. People from all over the country and even abroad come to Lahore to celebrate the ‘Kite-Flying’ Festival in true Lahori enthusiasm. In the recent years, corporate brands have sponsored concerts, decorated park and gone to extreme  lengths by producing Basant advertisements on TV during the much hyped season. One gets to see Yellow everywhere and hospitable Lahoris are always spotted on the roofs, either flying kites or arranging entertaining barbecue evenings. However, since the past few  years Basant has been banned due to its extreme negative consequences. Metallic twines used to fly kites are a great threat to life and safety.

This short documentary film highlights our concerns, as we aim to get the answer: ‘Basant: Bash or Blood?’

We made this in  2007 so please please ignore some sound and other technical issues.

Made by 3 girls who are still very proud of it.

Hope you enjoy! xx

Different Worlds

Silent emotions and choked cries

Astringent notions and hollow lies

In the corner, all alone

Aching for what has, all gone

As blistering fire savours the wood

My frustrations descend and grab me by the hood

As the aroma unfurled

A new story uncurled

Where major players were mischief and deceit

Where major gamers were grief and cheat

Bridges were burnt away

Which connected people every day

In a moment, massive walls were erected

In a spur, remorseful voices were dejected

Valuable lessons learnt

From those who had been hurt

Thrown in a different place

Running a meaningless race

Now, in a different world than yours

Amongst unknown people than ours

Don’t look at my photo and cry

For I am there and would always come by

But the ways have changed

As our worlds have changed

Look at the sky with a beaming smile and you’ll get to see

Look at the sea with a content soul and you’ll know where I be

Close your eyes and you will hear

And finally realize that I am but near

I wait for the day when we would unite

You and me, basking in the glorious sunlight

Blush BUS!

While walking on a dark road in London Victoria in pouring rain; numb hands, red nose and tear eyes I saw the Blushing Bus

It was a bar on wheels, I spotted people dancing and drinking inside while I admired and walked passed it! xx

Oscars 2013 – Fashion Round up!

Stunning ladies from Hollywood descended on the red carpet on 24th February 2013 for tinsel town’s most prestigious night – The Oscars! Red Carpet of Academy Awards is an event high on glamour, glitz and grandeur.

Apologies for being fashionably late with the Oscar Red Carpet fashion verdict 😉

Presenting the very best, worst and mediocre looks from the red carpet – let the fashion police begin inspecting!

MY FAVOURITE PICK – Catherine Zeta Jones

She looked absolutely extra-ordinary in the Zuhair Murad Gold dress! The hair and make-up very well complemented the look and was just like how it should have been, natural and light to keep the focus on the exquisite gown that I am still drooling over…

Bright Butterflies

Winter is all about greys, browns and black. Oh the monotony…I personally love bright and flashy colours, be it winter or summer, spring or autumn.

Reese Whiterspoon in blue Louis Vuitton gown and Jennifer Anniston in her bright Red Valentino along with sparkling accessories and a matching clutch looked dazzling.

Solagne Knowles  was spotted wearing a yummy yellow Emilio Pucci dress from the Spring 2013 Collection. Gold Jewels by Lorraine Schwartz, gold clutch and red lipstick perfected her look. Hello Sunshine!

                    2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

In Future

Naomi Watts wore a sequined  Giorgio Armani gown at the Oscars 2013. Fashion critics have termed her gown to be from ‘future’ and looking like an ‘alien’ descended from mars…I would say I am in love with her Shade of Grey 😉

Daring Divas

Brandi Glanville left me shocked with her outfit, which she reportedly designed herself. It revealed more than it concealed and in a bizarre manner if I may say so….

Her chest was the focus of attention – full emphasis on her surgically perfected breasts worth a whopping $11,500.  I am sorry but nothing seems to be working for the 40+ former model. Better luck next time Brandi!

Naomie Harris’s golden gown is made from recycled material by Ghana-born Michael Badger, a fashion student , who was mentored by Vivienne Westwood.  The outfit has been inspired from volcanoes and flowing lava and has won Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress Challenge

The dress was slit open from ankle till her waist. Highly risky and daring – the idea was to show her toned legs but put the Skyfall starlet into constant conscious behaviour while moving around and avoiding to show her underwear, if she was wearing one in the first place 😉

Chanel once said, ‘Fashion fades, only style remains the same’. For me diamonds, glamorous couture and red lips are en vogue – forever!

Anna Hathaway in Prada, Jennifer Lawrence in Dior albeit her royal tripping on the stairs  (blame the dress…) and Amy Chastain in a gold Armani Prive looked like eternal beauties – All time classics!

                                anne-hathaway        jennifer-lawrence         jessica-chastain

 Nicki Minaj’s  ‘WHITE MINI’ Disaster!

I am not quite sure what was going through her  head while donning the short, white Roberto Cavalli dress with the most dreadful lipstick shade I have even seen….till date! Unless she surprises me with another one late…

She wore this outfit to one of the most photographed events surrounding the Oscars, 2013 Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party.

I would call it a fashion debacle. Silence for 2 minutes.

Thats all folks! I shall be back with more fashionable updates soon, in the mean time, perfect your red carpet look 🙂 xx
